The shilajit result everyone quotes — a testosterone rise — was measured in men. The two randomised trials run in women measured something else: bone mineral density and skin microcirculation, both at 250 to 500 mg a day. If you are buying shilajit in the US, that dose window is the number to check on a label, not the milligram figure printed on the front.

THE STUDY THAT WAS NOT ABOUT YOU

The headline shilajit result was measured in men

Almost every shilajit page on the US internet traces back to one trial. Pandit and colleagues published it in Andrologia in 2016: healthy volunteers aged 45 to 55, purified shilajit at 250 mg twice a day, 90 days, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled. Total testosterone, free testosterone and DHEAS all rose against placebo, and LH and FSH held steady.

It is a clean study. It is also a study in men, measuring male androgens.

That matters more than it sounds. A woman reading "clinically shown to raise testosterone" is being sold a result that was never measured in anyone with her hormonal profile. Female testosterone is produced differently, circulates at a small fraction of male levels, and is not the limiting factor in the complaints that usually send women looking at shilajit in the first place — fatigue after 45, joint stiffness, thinning skin, bone density letters from a DEXA scan.

The honest question is not "does shilajit work for women." It is "what has anyone actually measured in women." Two trials have.

WHAT WAS TESTED IN WOMEN

Two randomised trials, both in women, both measuring something else

The first is the larger of the two. Pingali and Nutalapati randomised 60 postmenopausal women aged 45 to 65 with osteopenia to placebo, 250 mg or 500 mg of a standardised aqueous shilajit extract daily, and ran it for 48 weeks. Bone mineral density at the lumbar spine and femoral neck was scanned at weeks 0, 24 and 48. Blood markers of bone turnover (CTX-1, BALP, RANKL, OPG), oxidative stress (MDA, GSH) and inflammation (hsCRP) were taken at weeks 0, 12, 24 and 48.

Bone density fell in the placebo group over the year, which is what osteopenia after menopause does. In both supplemented groups the decline was attenuated, and it was attenuated more at 500 mg than at 250 mg. The authors attribute it to reduced bone turnover, inflammation and oxidative stress rather than to any hormonal effect. It was published in Phytomedicine in 2022.

The second trial is smaller and stranger, and it is the one that explains why shilajit shows up in skin conversations. Das and colleagues, publishing in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition in 2019 under trial registration NCT02762032, gave healthy adult women 125 mg or 250 mg twice daily for 14 weeks and took skin biopsies from the inner upper arm at the start and the end. They ran the full skin transcriptome and measured skin perfusion from dermascopic images.

At the higher dose, skin microperfusion improved against both baseline and placebo. Pathway analysis picked out genes tied to endothelial cell migration, growth of blood vessels and extracellular matrix, and those were confirmed by RT-PCR. No adverse effects were reported over the 14 weeks. This is gene expression and blood flow in skin, not a wrinkle score — but it is a mechanism, measured in women, in skin.

Read the middle column downward. Every one of these trials, including the male one, sits between 250 and 500 mg a day.

THE LABEL MATH

The number on the front of the pack is not the number in the trials

Both women's trials landed on 250 to 500 mg a day. So the useful thing to do with any shilajit label is convert it into that unit and see where it falls.

Our own two products convert like this. The ShilaSource resin is a 30 g jar and the label states 75 servings, which is 400 mg of resin per serving. That figure sits inside the window the trials used. Those two numbers describe different things, and the difference is the single most misread thing on any shilajit pack. A 10:1 ratio describes how much raw starting material went in, not how much finished extract comes out. 1500 mg is the input equivalent. 150 mg is what is in the serving. Compared against a trial window of 250 to 500 mg, the gummy serving is below the floor and the resin serving is not.

There is a caveat that cuts both ways, and it is worth stating rather than hiding. The trials used standardised, purified preparations made to a defined extraction — a 2026 analysis in the Journal of Chromatography A found that raw material, extract and resin are chemically distinct preparations that need separately validated methods to characterise. A retail resin is not automatically the same substance as trial material just because the milligram figure matches. Matching the dose window is a floor to clear, not a guarantee of equivalence.

THE TIMELINE NOBODY PRINTS

How long before anything changes: 24 weeks, not two

This is where most women stop taking it, and it is entirely predictable from the trial designs.

The bone trial did not scan bone density until week 24. Its first blood-marker readout came at week 12. It ran a full 48 weeks because that is how slowly bone remodels — you cannot see a density change on a shorter clock no matter what the supplement is. The skin trial ran 14 weeks before biopsying.

So the shortest interval at which either women's trial had anything to look at was roughly three months, and the endpoint most women care about took six to twelve.

What that means in practice: a two-week trial of shilajit tells you nothing except whether it upsets your stomach. Judging it on how you feel in week three is judging it against a clock no researcher used. If you are going to take it, budget two to three months before forming a view, and buy accordingly rather than buying one jar to "see."

It also means the practical problem is not choosing a product. It is not stopping. Consistency across months is the variable the trials controlled and the one real life does not.

THE MINERAL QUESTION

Why women should read the mineral claims differently

Shilajit is marketed on its mineral content — "85+ trace minerals" is on our own gummies pouch. A 2026 paper in the Journal of Trace Elements in Medicine and Biology is the most useful thing published on that claim so far. Kamgar and colleagues ran 12 shilajit samples from different geographical origins through ICP-MS, asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation and size-exclusion chromatography.

Three findings matter here. Calcium was the most abundant element, present as a calcium–lactic acid complex. Toxic elements — cobalt, nickel, lead, cadmium, mercury — sat below established toxicity thresholds across the set. And rare earth elements followed natural geochemical patterns, which points to environmental uptake from the rock rather than contamination in processing.

The fourth finding is the one that should change how you shop: there was distinct variability between origins in the major, essential and toxic elements alike. A mineral count on a label tells you what the category contains in principle. It does not tell you what is in the jar in front of you. Origin and lot-level testing carry that information; a number on the front panel does not.

For women specifically, iron is the element worth a sentence. Shilajit contains iron, and women of reproductive age are both the group most likely to be iron-deficient and the group for whom an unquantified iron load is least predictable. Shilajit is not an iron supplement, should not be used as one, and does not replace a serum ferritin test. If you are being treated for iron deficiency, adding an untested source of iron is a conversation with the clinician managing it, not a decision to make off a label.

And the hard one: there is no trial data on shilajit in pregnancy or breastfeeding. None. That is not a cautious reading of thin evidence — it is an absence of evidence, and the correct response to it is not to take it.

✅  Treat any "10:1" or raw-equivalent figure as input, not delivered dose

✅  Ask whether testing matches the lot on your jar, not an archived batch

✅  Plan for three months minimum before judging it

✅  Skip it entirely if pregnant, nursing, or being treated for an iron disorder

What about women under 45?

Straight answer: nobody has tested it. The bone trial recruited postmenopausal women aged 45 to 65. The skin trial recruited middle-aged adult women. Below that band the evidence is extrapolation, and it should be labelled as such.

Some of it extrapolates reasonably. The mechanism the bone trial points at — lower oxidative stress and lower inflammatory signalling — is not sex-specific or age-specific, and the skin research group had already reported the same extracellular-matrix genes upregulated in skeletal muscle in a separate group of participants. There is no biological reason those pathways switch off at 44.

Some of it does not extrapolate at all. The bone result depends on estrogen withdrawal being the thing driving the loss. In a 30-year-old with normal cycling estrogen there is no accelerated bone turnover for the supplement to attenuate, so the mechanism that produced the result is simply not operating. Buying shilajit at 30 for your bones is buying a result that cannot happen yet.

For a woman under 45 the reasonable position is that shilajit is a general antioxidant and mineral supplement with a clean short-term safety record in the published trials, not a targeted intervention. If that is worth $60 to you, take it. If you were expecting the bone or skin numbers, those were measured in a different decade of life.

What it costs in the US

Shilajit runs from $59.99 to $79.99 across the Wellness Nest range, and the format changes the per-serving figure far more than the sticker does.

Nobody has measured it. The testosterone trial was run in healthy men aged 45 to 55 at 250 mg twice daily for 90 days. Neither trial run in women measured androgens at all — they measured bone density and skin microcirculation. Any page telling a woman shilajit will raise her testosterone is quoting a male result at her.

How much shilajit should a woman take?

The two trials in women used 250 mg and 500 mg a day of a standardised extract, and the bone result was better at 500 mg than at 250 mg. That is the range with human data behind it in women. Convert whatever you buy into milligrams per serving and compare, and never exceed the serving printed on your own package.

Is shilajit safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

There is no trial data in pregnancy or breastfeeding, so there is no basis for saying it is safe. Do not take it. The same applies if you are trying to conceive and unsure — ask the clinician who knows your history.

Can shilajit help with menopause symptoms?

Not directly, on current evidence. The postmenopausal trial measured bone mineral density, bone turnover, oxidative stress and inflammation — not hot flushes, sleep or mood. It enrolled women with osteopenia because bone loss is what accelerates at menopause. If your concern is symptom relief rather than bone density, shilajit is not the thing that was studied.

How long does shilajit take to work for women?

Longer than most people give it. The skin trial ran 14 weeks before it biopsied. The bone trial did not scan until week 24 and ran 48 weeks in total. Three months is the shortest honest trial period, and six to twelve months is what the bone data was built on.

Should I worry about heavy metals in shilajit?

Worth attention, not panic. A 2026 ICP-MS analysis of 12 samples from different origins found toxic elements below established toxicity thresholds, but also found distinct variability between origins. That variability is the point: the category can be fine while an individual product is not.
