Lactobacillus leads healthy flora

In 396 women with no symptoms, vaginal bacteria fell into five community types. Four were led by one Lactobacillus species, such as L. crispatus or L. gasseri.

The fifth had fewer lactic acid bacteria and more anaerobes. Making lactic acid looked like the shared job of healthy communities.

02

Flora shifted in 64 healthy women

In a placebo-controlled trial, 64 healthy women took two oral Lactobacillus strains daily for 60 days. On microscopy, 37% moved to normal lactobacilli flora, vs 13% on placebo.

Note what was measured: swabs under a microscope and cultures, not odor or comfort. The women had no symptoms at the start.

03

Trials test named strain pairs

All three trials here used one strain pair: L. rhamnosus GR-1 plus RC-14. Reid 2003 names RC-14 L. fermentum; Vujic 2013 names it L. reuteri.

The code, not the species, marks the tested strain. A label that lists species names only cannot be matched to these trials.

A larger trial in women with BV

In a double-blind trial, 544 women diagnosed with BV or another vaginal infection took the two strains orally for 6 weeks. A cytologist read their swabs.

Balanced flora returned in 61.5% vs 26.9% on placebo. At 12 weeks it was 51.1% vs 20.8%. The abstract reports swabs, not odor or comfort.

05

In pregnancy, results were null

In a UK trial, pregnant women took the same two strains daily from early pregnancy. BV rates at 18 to 20 weeks did not differ: 15% vs 9% on placebo.

Microbiome makeup did not change either. Pregnant or trying? Talk to your doctor before you start any supplement.

What these trials did not test

Every trial here tested capsules of one Lactobacillus strain pair. None tested a gummy or a spore-based probiotic such as Bacillus coagulans.

None of the abstracts reports odor as an outcome; results came from swabs. Not tested is not disproven, but it is not proof either.

07

Trials tested daily use

Every trial above dosed women daily, from 6 weeks up to the rest of pregnancy (see sources). None tested taking it now and then.

So the best format is the one you will actually take every day.

08

Convenience is part of consistency

The trials tested a daily habit, not an occasional one. The practical question is which routine you will keep.

One option: FloraFresh Vaginal Probiotic Gummies, a pineapple-flavored gummy taken as two a day with a meal. Its probiotic is Bacillus coagulans SNZ-1969, not the strains tested above.
